Are you using SaniDerm, DermShield, or another bandage?

Awesome! Here are your specific aftercare instructions.

First Application

  • Keep your first covering on for 24 hours. It is completely normal to have liquid and ink gather under the covering.

  • To remove, I suggest standing in a shower or bath, or an easily cleaned surface, just in case any liquids drip. Lift an end, and slowly pull it away (like a command strip, away from the tattoo).

  • Do not rip it like a band-aid! It won’t be very comfortable to take off, but just go slow.

  • Wash with unscented, antibacterial soap, using clean hands. Do not use washcloths, loofas, or any scrubbing agent. If it is really stuck, or if you have adhesive left over, apply coconut oil, olive oil, or similar to the tattoo before washing.

  • Allow to air dry. Do not use towels to dry, although blotting with a paper towel is acceptable.

Second Application

  • Peel of paper backing to second application. It will be fairly statically attracted to your skin, so you may need a second pair of hands to hold the edges.

  • Position over tattoo, doing your best to cover the entirety of the tattoo. Starting on one end and continuing, push onto skin.

  • Lift edge of plastic cover (it may be stubborn, make sure to push skin cover onto your skin after peeling plastic edge up)

  • Slowly peel plastic cover off, being careful not to lift the skin cover off your tattoo.

  • Leave on for up to one week. If any irritation or discomfort arises, remove early and begin standard aftercare.

After Removing

  • Remove in the same manner as the first time, going slowly and carefully. You may see a shadow imprint of your tattoo on the skin cover. Don’t worry, you’re not losing your tattoo! This is the extra ink that isn’t needed.

  • Wash with unscented, antibacterial soap, using clean hands. Do not use washcloths, loofas, or any scrubbing agent. Gently rub the tattoo with your fingertips to remove any extra ink or plasma left on the skin.

For the second week of healing, and any longer needed, transfer back to the standard aftercare page here to finish!

Tips

  • Allergic reactions are rare, but if at any time you experience extreme discomfort, rash, or any other reaction, remove covering and do not replace. Resume standard aftercare for the remainder of your healing time.

  • Your covering is waterproof and breathable. This means you can shower normally without affecting your tattoo. However, I do not recommend exposing your tattoo to standing water, this includes pools, hot tubs, lakes, oceans, puddles, as there is a chance the water can still sneak under the covering.

  • Normal plastic wrap or saran wrap is not a replacement for this sanitary skin covering! Although great for short term right after you get tattooed, for long periods of time, it does not seal completely, nor does it breath. It will trap germs and bacteria under your skin, and keeps your skin too wet. This can severely damage your skin and tattoo, and cause infections or worse. Please do not keep normal plastic wrap on for more than a few hours.
